Shawn Paquette and Lila Beckley to Present on Vapor Intrusion at Austin Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section Meeting

Shawn Paquette (Houston) and Lila Beckley (Austin) will provide a presentation entitled “Vapor Intrusion:  Texas and Beyond” at the Austin Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section Meeting on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 12 pm.

Vapor intrusion (VI) is the migration of volatile chemicals from affected subsurface environmental media (i.e., NAPL, soil, groundwater) into the indoor air of overlying structures.  Over the past several decades, knowledge and regulations related to the VI exposure pathway have continually evolved, with the USEPA and most states issuing VI guidance documents.  While VI is not a default exposure pathway under the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP), this pathway has received increased scrutiny in Texas in recent years.  This presentation will address the current regulatory status in Texas and recent national developments that may become relevant in Texas in the future.  We will also provide an overview of investigation and evaluation techniques, potential pitfalls, and advanced assessment methods to minimize inaccurate findings and conclusions that can lead to costly and unnecessary response actions.
