Confidential/Blinded Data Survey for Oil and Gas Production Site Operators

This data survey is intended to require a minimum of effort for operators to provide key high-level information on Marginal Oil & Gas Production Sites.

  • “High priority” data are needed to develop robust methane emissions measurement campaigns in multiple U.S. regions/basins.
  • “Lower priority” data are requested in order to support subsequent data analyses and interpretation.

We intend to extrapolate the findings of three region-specific field campaigns across broader populations of production sites nationwide.  It is our understanding that many operators will have ready access to much of the requested information in existing databases.

We recognize the tremendous value of your time and the scientific value of the data you are agreeing to share, and we thank you in advance for both!

DATA BLINDING & CONFIDENTIALITY:  ALL DATA PROVIDED IN RESPONSE TO THIS SURVEY WILL BE BLINDED TO MAINTAIN THE ANONIMITY OF INDIVIDUAL RESPONDENTS AND SITE LOCATIONS.  ALL COMPLETED/RETURNED QUESTIONNAIRES WILL BE TREATED AS CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION, STORED AND TRANSMITTED WITH PASSWORD-LEVEL PROTECTION, AND ACCESSIBLE ONLY BY PROJECT TEAM PERSONNEL ON A NEED-TO-KNOW BASIS. Blinded responses will be compiled in a database expected to become publicly available in the future; however, the database will not include respondent identities or site location coordinates (Lat, Long).
Project Overview
PumpSMThe U.S.Dept of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy has funded a research study, titled Quantification of Methane Emissions from Marginal (Small Producing) Oil and Gas Wells. The data collected in this study will help address critical knowledge gaps and support best management practices that are appropriate for marginal oil and gas wells—e.g., oil wells that produce less than 15 bpd or gas wells that produce less than 90 MCFD.   [Read More]

Production Site CATEGORY Questionnaire: Please use this form to provide data for groups of Production Sites with similar characteristics. We request that site categories be differentiated, at a minimum, by geologic basin, oil or gas production, marginal production status, and presence or absence of wells and ancillary equipment.  Please define additional subcategories, as needed, to further distinguish groups of sites with substantially different characteristics.

Production Site LOCATION Questionnaire: Please use this form to provide data for individual Production Site locations.   This alternate questionnaire allows the requested information to be provided on a per-location basis, instead of combined into groups.  For some survey respondents, this may be easier to populate from an existing database than the site category questionnaire.

If you would like to provide additional or modified data for any sites, you can amend, update and re-submit either questionnaire multiple times between now and January 31, 2020. Your responses will be updated accordingly in our database.

What if all of the requested information for my wells isn’t readily available in existing database(s)?

Except for site ID (per your own designation) any other cells on the data row for a Production Site may be left blank. Our preference is to receive as much data as you can provide with a minimum of effort as soon as possible.   If you are able to compile and submit additional data at a later date, that will be helpful and most appreciated, but please don’t let that delay your submittal of more readily available data.

Are there certain geographic areas of interest for this data survey?

We are gathering data on oil and gas production sites throughout the US.  It is important for us to understand the diversity of production site characteristics nationwide in order to best represent these in field measurement campaigns which, necessarily, are limited to several regions.

What counts as a “Production Site”?
For purposes of this survey, we consider a Production Site to be any onshore surface site that obtains crude oil, natural gas, condensate, or any mixture of these from either of the following, without a custody transfer:  (i) one or more wells,  or (ii) one or more other Production Sites

In other words, a Production Site could include (a) wells only, (b) gathering and/or processing equipment with no wells (e.g., a centralized tank battery), or (c) a combination of on-site wells and gathering/processing equipment that service wells from the site itself plus other Production Sites.  More precise definitions are described in the questionnaire forms.
